I have a fascination with scale in art. On of my favorite things is when art makes us question our own scale. Since I was very young I imagined myself very small and among my toys. I think this probably came from wanting to pilot and control my toys, whether they be cars, space ships or even legos. One of the toys most exhausted in my toy box were Mico Machines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Machines). Hundreds of hours with my extensive collection had me laying down under beds, behind couches and in the flower bed imagining I was part of their world. I remember very strongly when the film "Honey I shrunk the Kids" came out. Back before a time when CG had numbed audiences to the wonders of visual effects, my 8 year old mind found itself sleeping in giant overturned legos, and sliding down grass blades.
Here I am now, older, with a camera in hand looking for inspiration when I found myself standing in a hobby shop admiring all of the miniatures. I've been around models and Lionel trains my whole life... duh. Lets take pictures of them!
I think this is the beginning of a few experiments into what I can convey through the use of scale. Over the next few months I have a list of shots I will be trying out, and if sucessful I'll post them and let you know how I shot them.
I rather liked this shot of the little girl and her teddy. Just two boots and a soft box used here. I payed a lot of attention to the light on her face.
